ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out Friday morning at a campus substation along Campus Drive East near the Outdoor Pool Complex, leaving the eastern UA area without power until it was restored at 10:17 a.m.—firefighters and police quickly responded to the scene.  The Crimson White

CRIME NEWS

  • A lawsuit accused bus driver Samuel Lee Jones and the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education of abusing a non-verbal student with autism on January 29th as video evidence captured him striking the student multiple times while aides did not intervene—police arrested the 74-year-old driver on felony assault charges and the suit seeks redress under federal law.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jeopardy! hosted a Thursday night episode featuring an 'Around Alabama' category that challenged contestants with clues on local history, including Albertville's fire hydrant nickname and Auburn's founding, Talladega's forest, Enterprise's boll weevil monument, and Dauphin Island's French past—testing players on their local knowledge.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • On Tuesday, September 30, the Stillman College Art Gallery will host Dr. Giggie who will deliver a presentation on Stillman College’s role in the civil rights movement with a focus on Bloody Tuesday in 1964 — the free event will run from 11:00 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. at the gallery behind the Hay Center through the 36th Avenue gate.  Tuscaloosa Thread

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture declared disaster status for more than half of Alabama to help farmers in 39 counties who have suffered from heavy spring rain and a summer drought — a double hit that has damaged farm operations and reduced production.  ABC 33/40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Alabama opened the FORTE workplace safety training hub on Friday to give industrial workers and students hands-on safety training—replacing the Tuscaloosa Music Building at 1408 2nd Avenue.  Tuscaloosa Thread

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tuscaloosa received a grant to build more sidewalks that will help improve pedestrian safety—city officials will soon begin finalizing design plans.  WBRC
  • A federal grant of $800k with $200k from city funds will pay for the Ash Street Sidewalk Project that will add nearly 800 feet of new sidewalk in a busy area—improving safety for pedestrians. The new path will connect the YMCA, McDonald Hughes Center and Kaulton Park—promising better access while work is planned for the future.  WBRC
  • ALDOT will close lanes on US-82 in Coker on September 29 and 30 for Big Creek Bridge construction. Crews will place 14 girders with lane closures lasting up to 15 minutes between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.+ a state trooper will help control traffic.  ABC 33/40
