- ➤ A security officer at William Donaldson Correctional Facility was arrested Thursday for allegedly promoting prison contraband after trying to avoid a shakedown and admitting to having marijuana—authorities recovered packages with about 230 grams of marijuana, 172 grams of methamphetamine and an unknown substance as they continue their investigation. - ➤ A community-based program called SAFER Together launched Friday in Birmingham to improve mental health for veterans by promoting secure firearms storage—this new initiative is part of a law signed by Gov. Kay Ivey in April that encourages Federal Firearms License agreements and has already seen local gun shop Redland Rifle join the effort.
