  • Tuscaloosa will mark its 206th birthday on December 13 — a milestone tracing back to its 1819 founding and role as an early state capital. Mayor Walt Maddox, a lifelong resident, honors a legacy that shaped the city’s growth in education and community.  AL.com
  • The Duncanville Volunteer Fire Department moved to a new station on Highway 82 East to improve safety (it relocated from near Maxwell Elementary). It plans to build a safe room for up to 300 people as a polling place, with construction to start after the January bid process.  ABC 33/40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Alabama board of education approved a mandatory K-12 digital literacy and computer science course so public schools will have 18 months to begin integrating the new curriculum. The course framework covers programming basics, digital tools, data analysis, cybersecurity, and career paths (among other standards) to support student success.  AL.com
  • Twenty-three district teachers earned National Board Certification on Thursday, Dec. 11, with seven from Rock Quarry Elementary (a milestone that ranks the district as the second highest statewide).  WBRC
  • Alumni nonprofit Masthead raised over $25k to fund new student run magazines after the University suspended Nineteen Fifty-Six and Alice Magazine. The fundraiser launched Monday and will continue until Feb. 3 to mark the 70th anniversary of Autherine Lucy Foster’s enrollment, showing strong local support for student media.  The Crimson White

  • Alabama linebacker Deontae Lawson has accepted an invitation to participate in the Senior Bowl set for Saturday, January 31 in Mobile — the event will kickstart his pre-NFL draft process in his hometown as he returns from an ACL injury.  Tide 100.9
  • Alabama football announced four freshmen—London Simmons, Dijon Lee, Kaleb Edwards, and Michael Carroll—earned Freshman All-SEC honors after starting multiple games this season in Tuscaloosa. Their recognition boosts the Crimson Tide's early-year performance.  Tide 100.9
