ECONOMY NEWS

  • A WBRC investigation shows that Alabamians pay among the highest electric bills in the nation—averaging $173 per month, mostly from Alabama Power. Energy Alabama’s president Daniel Tait said the current formula rate model lets investors earn high profits and urged regulators to review the system.  WBRC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a Thursday meeting, Tuscaloosa City Schools leaders said the district earned an 86 on its state report card—its highest score since 2018, with 14 schools showing steady gains. They added that new teaching strategies helped every student and that the goal is to reach an A system grade soon.  Tuscaloosa Thread
  • At the Bama Theatre in downtown Tuscaloosa, 23 University of Alabama apparel design seniors showcased their final collections during the annual Fashion for Life event on November 16—ticket proceeds were donated to United Way of West Alabama—and Estée Lauder Companies matched the donation.  The University of Alabama
  • The Tuscaloosa County School Board named Dr. Daniel Bray as the new superintendent and he will take office tomorrow—replacing Dr. Keri Johnson who left in August. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The city, ADEM and local clean water groups signed a settlement to stop chronic sewage spills that have led to over 42 million gallons of untreated waste spilling since 2017. The agreement promises millions in upgrades to fix broken pipes, failing treatment plants and lift stations — a move the Black Warrior Riverkeeper called a big win.  WBRC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alabama Crimson Tide has been the most-watched college football team this season, with Nielsen reporting that the Tide averaged 8.14 million viewers weekly and surpassed 10 million in key games — including matchups against Georgia and Oklahoma — as it prepares for the upcoming Iron Bowl kickoff. The team will work to clinch the SEC championship with a win over Auburn and additional help this weekend.  Tide 100.9
  • On November 19, Alabama basketball played at United Center in Chicago where Labaron Philon Jr. scored 24 points and hit four late field goals that helped seal a 90-86 win against Illinois—boosting confidence as the team prepares for games in Las Vegas on November 24 and 25.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Iron and Ember opened at the Jerry Pate Golf Center at Ol’ Colony on November 19, showcasing indoor simulators that allow anyone to play a virtual round of golf + a sign honors the legendary golfer Jerry Pate.   • Alabama Crimson Tide was the most watched team this season with games drawing over 8 million viewers and several surpassing 10 million.   • Alabama women’s basketball beat Samford (84-45) last night as their tough perimeter defense kept the Bulldogs from scoring well, and the team will head to Nassau for the Pink Flamingo Tournament where they face Harvard on Monday at 5:30 p.m.  Tide 100.9
