COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of West Alabama used an emergency fund to provide a $50,000 food assistance grant to 75 food banks serving nine counties as delayed SNAP benefits and missed federal pay add to food insecurity — the organization will issue weekly grants of $250 to $500 to help food pantries secure discounted meals.  WBRC
  • Historic Tuscaloosa invited community members to help restore the Old Tavern (a treasured local landmark) at 500 Nick's Kids Avenue on November 16 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers will do landscaping, cleanup, painting and other maintenance work and receive a free Historic Tuscaloosa t-shirt upon arrival.  Tuscaloosa Thread

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Alabama system board approved a new School of Leadership and Policy that will offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in public policy and leadership starting in fall 2027—designed to give students hands-on experience with internships and community projects. UA President Peter J. Mohler and UA System Chancellor Sid J. Trant said the new school will prepare future leaders to improve life in Alabama.  ABC 33/40

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Deer hunters have harvested 9,279 deer so far this season — including a record 350 in Winston County — as the season runs from Oct. 15 to Feb. 10. Local officials note that the early numbers reflect active participation and healthy deer populations across the state.  The Tuscaloosa News

  • On Tuesday, Nov. 11, Alabama will observe Veterans Day with federal and state offices, banks, post offices and schools closed — grocery and retail stores will stay open with modified hours and garbage pickup may be delayed.  The Tuscaloosa News

  • Alabama is working to prevent more rural hospital closures as Governor Ivey announced the state submitted its plan for the Rural Health Transformation Program to CMS. The $50 billion proposal will boost rural health care quality and access and will be managed by ADECA if funding is approved later this year.  Tuscaloosa Thread

  • The Alabama women's basketball team beat McNeese State 64-44 on Thursday as Essence Cody scored a career-high 23 points, helping the Crimson Tide rally in the second half after a slow start—they will host Alcorn State Monday at 6 p.m. at Coleman Coliseum.  Tuscaloosa Thread

  • Former Alabama football star Woodrow Lowe, a three-time All-American who played 11 NFL seasons with the Chargers, died at his home in Collierville on Thursday—he was 71.  Alabama Public Radio
  • The fourth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide hosts the LSU Tigers today at Bryant-Denny Stadium in a key rivalry game that often affects SEC Championship chances.
