COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army in Tuscaloosa is seeking volunteers to ring bells for its holiday red kettle campaign to support over 1,000 local children this season. Director John Edmonds (from the local branch) said volunteers will work for a few hours (helping the community celebrate) over several days.  Tuscaloosa Thread

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. James Harris and Dr. Igor Fedin from UA received the NSF CAREER Award+ for their research on sustainable aviation fuel and light-emitting nanocrystals. Harris will model yttrium’s behavior in zeolites and Fedin will develop electrodes to track quantum dot formation+ as they work to advance technology and student learning.  The University of Alabama
  • Myrtlewood Elementary students visited the Tuscaloosa County School System K-12 Ag Farm on Nov 6th, where they learned how plants grow and how bees help pollinate wildflowers — teachers led hands-on activities that showed the students how to water and care for crops.  The Tuscaloosa News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, the Tuscaloosa Main Post Office hosted a walk-in job fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.—seeking individuals for USPS Rural Carrier positions offering $20.85 per hour that may lead to full-time roles and requiring a valid state driver's license, a safe driving record, and a passed background check.  Tuscaloosa Thread
  • The City of Tuscaloosa honored Marshall Four today with a ceremony recognizing their community contributions.  WBRC
  • Antioch Bethlehem District Association and Tuscaloosa Ministerial Alliance donated a $4,500 check to Temporary Emergency Services in Tuscaloosa—funds that will help buy food for SNAP recipients and furloughed federal workers affected by the government shutdown.  WBRC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Northside beat Beauregard 48-14 in the AHSAA playoffs last night; junior quarterback Jackson Rhoades (who threw five touchdowns) helped the Rams improve to 11-0 and they will host the winner of the Vigor versus Charles Henderson game on November 14th under coach Robbie Jones.  Tuscaloosa Thread
  • Woodrow Lowe, a former Alabama football linebacker and College Football Hall of Fame member, died at 71. He set a Crimson Tide record with 134 tackles in 1973 — he won four SEC championships with coach Bear Bryant during his college career.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Rick Pitino (Hall of Famer) described Alabama basketball as the most unique team to play in the country, praising their quick offense and noting that his St. John's team will face them after a win over Quinnipiac. The game (scheduled for tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT) will take place at Madison Square Garden on FS1.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Alabama Crimson Tide will play LSU Tigers tomorrow, November 8, in a game that could shift tactics after LSU’s coaching change.
