- ➤ Jasper flight instructor Lainey Anderson (of Sanders Aviation) died along with her sister Ellie and their father when a twin engine plane, flown by her father, experienced engine trouble and crashed in a remote area of Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana on Oct. 17. WBRC
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Auburn, UAB, Alabama and Samford earned strong positions in the U.S. News Best Colleges Report for 2026, with Auburn ranking #102 in National Universities and earning marks in engineering and nursing. The report evaluated more than 1,700 schools to help students match each institution’s strengths to their needs — a data-driven guide for prospective students. ABC 33/40
- ➤ Edward Tang, UA’s chair of American Studies, died earlier this month at age 61 after medical complications (he had been a faculty member since 1998 and led the department since 2018) and colleagues recalled his kind nature and lasting impact on students and faculty. The Crimson White
- ➤ On Friday, the University announced its College of Engineering will be renamed the Lee J. Styslinger Jr. College of Engineering in honor of a $25 million gift from Catherine Styslinger. The Board of Trustees approved the donation in a special meeting — the new name will help boost research and new degree programs. The Crimson White
