  • Today, Tuscaloosa’s Metro Animal Shelter is joining the national "Empty the Shelters" event through Oct. 15 where dogs and cats can be adopted for $10 instead of the usual fees. Funded by the Bissell Pet Foundation, the event aims to ease shelter overcrowding while boosting volunteer and foster participation.  The Crimson White
  • On October 12, the Sunday Legacy Gala honored local leaders for their service to the community—organizers noted each honoree’s lasting impact. The event celebrated the achievements of those who helped shape local progress.  WBRC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Judges wrapped up naming winners at Sunday’s Kentuck Festival of the Arts at Snow Hinton Park near University Mall where nearly 270 artists displayed their work.   • School leaders in west Alabama finished the Educator Workforce Academy—organized by West Alabama Works—that gave them hands-on experience visiting local businesses like Phifer and Mercedes Benz to create career pathways for students.  WBRC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On October 9, the SGA Senate passed an act that set up a survey to gauge student opinions on Shelby Hall testing conditions and updated Senate rules regarding speaker duties and the Committee on Belonging and Wellness. The Senate also confirmed 65 First Year Council members selected from over 1,300 applicants and moved a bill to add a Student Support section listing UA resource centers to the SGA website.  The Crimson White

  • University organizations celebrated World Mental Health Day on Friday by tabling on the Crimson Promenade to share information on mental health and substance use. The Counseling Center, Health Promotion and Wellness, and READY (Resources, Education and Advocacy for Drug-Free Youth) provided flyers and tips to help students understand how substance use can affect mental health.  The Crimson White

  • Eighth-ranked Alabama edged Missouri 27-24 on Saturday after Ty Simpson threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns — including a winning fourth-down pass to Daniel Hill with 3:16 remaining — to secure their fifth straight win and end Missouri’s 15-game home streak. Alabama will host No. 12 Tennessee next Saturday while Missouri faces Auburn on the same day.  CBS 42
