- ➤ Habitat For Humanity Tuscaloosa started the 2025 Women Build event to help Rickelle Riley and her daughters build a new home—dozens of women will volunteer on the project throughout October as part of a national effort to provide safe, affordable housing. WBRC
- ➤ The 32nd annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive begins today at The University of Alabama and runs through Nov. 20 to support the West Alabama Food Bank amid food insecurity. A kickoff event on Oct. 6 at 10:30 a.m. will take place on Montgomery’s state capitol steps — with representatives from UA and Auburn and donations from Governor Kay Ivey — to boost the effort. - ➤ Warrior Met Coal Mining won a $46 million bid for federal coal leases in north Tuscaloosa County covering 14,050 acres that could create over 400 jobs. - ➤ A University of Alabama research team discovered 65-million-year-old crab and shrimp fossils in central Alabama, including several new species and a new one now called the Saban crab—named after the famed football coach Nick Saban.
