EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Tuscaloosa City Schools is facing a shortage of certified special education teachers and will seek emergency funds for a pilot program that promotes current employees— the proposal will be discussed at the school board meeting on Tuesday, September 30 at 5:30 p.m. ABC 33/40
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Kay Ivey said she will not call a special session to redraw Senate districts after a federal judge ruled the current map violates the Voting Rights Act. The federal court will take charge of drawing new lines unless lawmakers overturn the ruling (Anna Manasco led the decision). Alabama Public Radio
- ➤ The City of Tuscaloosa will consider two resolutions to appropriate opioid settlement funds to local nonprofits for the FY 2026 budget. Freedom Farm will receive $250,000 and Phoenix House will get $150,000— the council will meet on September 30 at 5 p.m. to vote on the funding. ABC 33/40
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Walker County reported a tuberculosis case at Jasper High this school year after a student was diagnosed; the school offered free testing for close contacts and cleaned the facility with hospital-grade sanitizer to keep everyone safe.
