- ➤ Today, the Alabama Miners Memorial Foundation is hosting a memorial service at West Brookwood Church at 12882 Lock 17 Road in Brookwood to honor 13 coal miners who died in a 2001 explosion at Jim Walter Resources Mine No. 5, with music starting at 4 p.m. and the ceremony beginning at 5 p.m.—James Landers will speak while Kenn Spencer and Promised Land perform. - ➤ A vigil was held at Denny Chimes on Sunday evening by the Black UA community in honor of Trey Reed—a 21-year-old Delta State University student found dead hanging from a tree on Sept. 15—while state officials ruled his death a suicide and his family seeks further investigation. - ➤ Social Bites, a late-night restaurant and arcade at Lakeside Dining Hall, held its grand opening on Sept. 18 by replacing Sola and offering free samples of pizza, burgers, tacos and hot chicken. Bama Dining's manager Bruce McVeagh said the venue operates daily from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.—and opens earlier on home football game days—and has received very positive feedback from students while planning expansion. - ➤ Luke Herrine, an assistant professor at the University of Alabama School of Law, received the Freedom Scholar award from the Marguerite Casey Foundation for his work as a student debt abolitionist and cofounder of Debt Collective—he helped cancel hundreds of millions in student debt and will guide future steps to make college more affordable. - ➤ SGA and UA Libraries partnered with the Wall Street Journal to provide free digital access for UA students, faculty and staff. The three-year subscription, with the first year free via the WSJ private foundation, will help business students avoid extra costs—removing a common academic barrier. The Crimson White

- ➤ City leaders hosted the fourth annual Excellence Awards at the Tuscaloosa River Market where more than 80 employees were given plaques for years of service and job excellence. Mayor Walt Maddox spotlighted workers with 25, 30 and 35 years of service — a gesture that honors their dedication. WBRC
- ➤ The Tuscaloosa City Council will review job class specifications for new roles, including Executive Director and Director of Facility Operations, at the upcoming Saban Center on Tuesday, September 23. The Saban Center is a $120 million project with an extra $5 million pledged by the Poarch Creek Indians—set to finish by 2027—and will house children’s theatre and IGNITE programs. ABC 33/40
- ➤ On Friday, the City of Tuscaloosa held its fourth annual employee excellence awards at Tuscaloosa River Market as it honored over 80 city staff and conducted a ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. for the new McWright’s Ferry Road extension while dedicating the Mr. and Mrs. Leroy McAbee Sr. Bridge to recognize local contributions. On Sunday, a litter clean up organized by the Alabama Interfraternity Council and District 4 Councilor Lee Busby ran from 10:30 a.m.—11:45 a.m. starting at Paker-Haun Park and extending to downtown and nearby areas. - ➤ Alabama is coming off a win against Wisconsin and will face Georgia as underdogs after its bye week — betting odds show the Tide are 3.5 point underdogs and that they were last favored over Georgia in October 2020. Tide 100.9
- ➤ Alabama’s 2026 football class is full of talent as head coach Kalen DeBoer and his team secured 21 hard commits including 4 five-star players. The class — which features standout RB commit Ezavier Crowell — is ranked number 4 by 24/7 Sports and is set to boost Crimson Tide football. Tide 100.9
- ➤ SEC teams showed strong promise in Week 4 as No. 12 Oklahoma moved to 4-0 with a 24-17 win over Auburn—despite a disputed touchdown ruling—and Missouri edged South Carolina 29-20 at home. - ➤ Northport City Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow to consider a resolution authorizing the city administrator to sign an agreement with SNAP Sports Tourism Consulting for Northport Shore—a new 300-acre sports complex expected to welcome over 500,000 visitors annually and generate about $60 million in revenue. The project includes River Run Park, which opened in August with nine sports fields hosting tournaments through November, while plans also call for a hotel to open by 2027 and an indoor facility by late next year.
