  • Today, 800 runners and walkers will run a 3.1-mile race to kick off Tuscaloosa Oktoberfest at Government Plaza from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The race is presented by Mercedes-Benz and benefits the American Cancer Society—drawing extra attention to the free festival featuring German food, games and dog contests.  Tuscaloosa Thread

  • A group of local investors including Joe Gillis, Chris Mobley, Miller Mobley, Kenny Short and Andy Turner purchased NorthRiver Yacht Club from Troon this week—bringing the prestigious club back under local ownership. EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Alabama recorded a record fall enrollment of 42,360 students, and new President Dr. Peter Mohler voiced concerns on Sept. 17 that rapid growth may harm campus culture & reduce personal connections that have defined UA since enrollment was 37,100 in 2015. He noted that increases in in-state, out-of-state, and graduate students require UA to balance expansion with keeping its familiar, close-knit community.  AL.com

  • Leaders cut the ribbon on Friday morning for the new McWright's Ferry Road extension in north Tuscaloosa. The $60 million project connects Rice Mine Road to New Watermelon Road near the North River—boosting emergency response and spurring residential growth.  Tuscaloosa Thread
  • Earlier today, more than 80 Tuscaloosa city workers were honored at the River Market during the Employee Excellence Awards—an annual event recognizing service—with Mayor Walt Maddox praising their commitment and dedication.   • Alabama basketball will play Kennesaw State in Huntsville on Dec. 21 as part of the Rocket City Classic+ the team expects to earn $50,000 for the game and if the agreement is cancelled, Huntsville will receive the payment instead.  The Tuscaloosa News
