COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Alabama Red Cross needs 50 shelter volunteers—10 teams of five—to help set up beds, serve food and offer comfort during hurricanes, tornadoes and floods. The organization said volunteers can work locally to provide both care and emotional support to those still affected by Hurricane Katrina.  WBRC

CRIME NEWS

  • Two individuals—one adult and one juvenile—were arrested in connection with an Aug. 29 Northport shooting that injured a 15-year-old when several gunshots were fired near a residence on the 2600 block of 16th Avenue.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • On Aug. 29, a shooting during a dice game at Cottondale Efficiency Apartments on Kyle Court injured one person who was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening wounds—police are still investigating and no arrests have been made.  The Tuscaloosa News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new tax exemption for baby supplies and menstrual products takes effect today when House Bill 152 signed by Governor Kay Ivey removes the state’s 4% sales tax on items such as baby formula, diapers, and menstrual products—local governments may also choose to extend similar exemptions to support women and families.  ABC 33/40

HEALTH NEWS

  • Taylor Fresh Foods is voluntarily recalling the Taylor Farms Honey Balsamic Salad Kit today because undeclared sesame and soy allergens may pose a serious health risk—Alabama is one of the 25 states affected and consumers should check for the TFRS code and Best If Used By date up to September 4.  Tuscaloosa Thread

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida State beat Alabama 31-17 in their season opener, and coach Norvell said his team showed heart by rushing well while transfer quarterback Castellanos helped move the ball. The Seminoles improved to 1-0 and Alabama fell to 0-1—after a long opening drive by the Tide—while Florida State will play East Texas A&M next Saturday.  Tide 100.9
  • Alabama lost by 14 points to Florida State on Saturday and quarterback Ty Simpson said he did not play well—he took full responsibility for the defeat. He added that his team will work hard to fix mistakes as they prepare to face Louisiana Monroe next Saturday in Tuscaloosa—aiming for their first win.  Tuscaloosa Thread
  • Voting was open for the Tuscaloosa News Girls' Athlete of the Week for Aug. 29-30—coaches submitted stats to nominate three Northridge volleyball players—and the poll closed at noon Thursday.  The Tuscaloosa News
