COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mary Ann Phelps, a longtime civic leader who helped build Tuscaloosa's parks and public facilities (including work with the PARA), died Aug. 15 at her home at 93. A visitation is set for noon Aug. 21 at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Tuscaloosa (following a private family service).  The Tuscaloosa News

CRIME NEWS

  • Officer Jessica Wilson of the UA Police Department was awarded the Carolyn Potter Outstanding Anti-Human Trafficking Service Award for her leadership on the West Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force—she has used community work to investigate cases and bring traffickers to justice.  WBRC
  • Alabama Governor Kay Ivey set Oct. 23 as the execution date for inmate Anthony Boyd, 53, convicted for burning Gregory Huguley to death in 1993 after a failed $200 cocaine deal, and Boyd filed a lawsuit claiming the nitrogen gas method is unconstitutionally cruel—while a federal hearing is set for Sept. 4.  Alabama Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McLure Library reopened this summer after extensive renovations updated its systems, improved ADA access and added a west side addition near Stadium Drive. The building now houses the School of Library and Information Studies — featuring new learning labs and classrooms for modern education.  The University of Alabama

  • Yesterday, Mayor Walt Maddox presented his Fiscal Year 2026 budget proposal to the Tuscaloosa City Council—focusing on public safety, education, infrastructure and innovation—while avoiding cuts amid limited sales tax revenue growth.  ABC 33/40

SPORTS NEWS

  • Eleven Alabama football players were named to the 2025 preseason All-SEC coaches team on Aug. 19—headlined by offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor and wide receiver Ryan Williams—and the team will open its season on Aug. 30 at Florida State.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Houston Mallette handed out free biscuits on move-in day for University of Alabama students as the Crimson Tide introduced Jack’s as its official biscuit sponsor for the 2025-26 athletic season.
