  • The University of Alabama School of Social Work has built the Black Belt Internship Initiative to connect students with community work in Dallas County and Selma, where they support youth and families alongside local leaders—this program, which started as a pilot in 2023, will expand with more student participation and deeper partnerships to meet local needs.  The University of Alabama

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tuscaloosa City, Tuscaloosa City Schools, and Mountain Brook filed a suit on Aug.12 in Montgomery Circuit Court against the Alabama Department of Revenue to challenge the SSUT that lets large companies like Amazon and Walmart avoid local sales taxes — Mayor Walt Maddox said the current rule costs the city nearly $15 million a year, hurting funding for public safety and education.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Leaders gathered on Thursday morning in west Tuscaloosa to begin work on a plaza honoring the historic Howard-Linton Barbershop—sacred ground for the Civil Rights Movement as Mayor Walt Maddox said. The $1.4 million project—expected to be completed in 2026—will include etched story panels and a bronze relief of Reverend Doctor Thomas Linton to preserve this important part of our history.  Tuscaloosa Thread
