- ➤ The family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Jefferson County DHR and Covenant Services after their 3-year-old boy died in a hot car in Birmingham on July 22—he was left unattended for over five hours during a heat advisory and found unresponsive at 6:03 p.m. The driver was arrested on Aug. 1 and the case remains under investigation. - ➤ After renovations, the Alabama Materials Institute reopened with new tools that help UA work with industry and government while experts like Dr. Jeri Zemke are available to talk about the need to stay hydrated as sports practices continue. - ➤ A new LawnStarter study using FEMA data shows eight Alabama counties are at risk for flooding—Jefferson, Houston, Mobile, Choctaw, Baldwin, Coffee, Morgan, and Tuscaloosa—with Jefferson facing frequent river flooding and Tuscaloosa recording low flood preparedness.
