CRIME NEWS

  • The family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Jefferson County DHR and Covenant Services after their 3-year-old boy died in a hot car in Birmingham on July 22—he was left unattended for over five hours during a heat advisory and found unresponsive at 6:03 p.m. The driver was arrested on Aug. 1 and the case remains under investigation.  CBS 42

  • After renovations, the Alabama Materials Institute reopened with new tools that help UA work with industry and government while experts like Dr. Jeri Zemke are available to talk about the need to stay hydrated as sports practices continue. UA will pay for proctored exams for online classes starting this fall—helping students succeed.  The University of Alabama

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new LawnStarter study using FEMA data shows eight Alabama counties are at risk for flooding—Jefferson, Houston, Mobile, Choctaw, Baldwin, Coffee, Morgan, and Tuscaloosa—with Jefferson facing frequent river flooding and Tuscaloosa recording low flood preparedness. Experts warn that even a low chance for a hurricane this season can bring strong storms and heavy damage if proper precautions are not taken.  The Tuscaloosa News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alabama football is ranked No. 8 in the preseason AP Top 25 poll released Aug. 11 — the team finished last season at No. 17 and will open its season against Florida State on Aug. 30. The team also was ranked No. 8 in the US LBM Coaches Poll.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • The Crimson Tide is ranked No. 8 in the initial AP Poll for the 2025 season—the lowest preseason ranking since 2008. The team will face the unranked Florida State Seminoles in its upcoming matchup.  Tuscaloosa Thread
