  • Fourteen firefighters from Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue returned home after a two-week deployment to Kerr County, Texas—where they worked long shifts on search and rescue after deadly flooding—and will take a long weekend before returning for peer support on Monday.  ABC 33/40
  • Children in downtown Tuscaloosa braved the rain and heat on Friday to participate in Lemonade Day and raise funds for the Boys & Girls Club—money that will help pay for supplies and support after school programs during the clubhouse renovation.   • Fourteen Tuscaloosa firefighters returned home Friday, July 25 at 10:30 a.m.—they spent 14 days in Kerr County, Texas assisting in flood recovery after a massive flood killed more than 130 people.  WBRC

  • Yesterday, the Tuscaloosa Education Foundation and its community partners provided nearly half a million dollars in back-to-school supplies for kids at The Venue in Tuscaloosa — each child also could choose a toy with their supplies.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Seventeen children from the University of Alabama RISE Center celebrated their graduation on July 24—during the ceremony they performed music and now are set to begin kindergarten at local schools.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Northport City Councilwoman Jamie Dykes is running for re-election in District 4 to finish projects like the new River Run Park baseball and softball complex and repaving Main Avenue as the municipal election on August 26 approaches. Dykes, a program assistant at the University of Alabama elected in 2020, also seeks an independent review of a $350 million University Beach lagoon resort agreement—she was the only council member to oppose the deal last year.  Tuscaloosa Thread

HEALTH NEWS

  • Record heat in Alabama has boosted harmful bacteria in lakes, pools and coastal waters with 41 Legionella cases reported this July compared to 36 last year and 18 Vibrio cases so far, while the state health department notes that Vibrio infections are declining. The ADPH urges bathing before swimming and covering open wounds to prevent illness — temperatures are expected to reach triple digits by Monday.  The Tuscaloosa News
