- ➤ Families across Alabama can save extra cash on school supplies during the back-to-school sales tax holiday as state sales tax is removed on items like computers and clothing. UAB economics expert Ben Meadows said some cities and counties—such as Birmingham, Gardendale, Alabaster and Clanton—offer extra local tax breaks for families spending about $800 to $900 on school supplies, and the holiday ends today at midnight.
