  • Tuscaloosa will host the 17th annual Sokol Park professional rodeo July 10-12 at the Ray C. Jenkins Multipurpose Arena at Munny Sokol Park, where gates open at 5:30 p.m. and events start at 7:30 p.m. The event features calf roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing, bronco riding, bull riding plus a mechanical bull, a rock climbing wall, bungee jumps and various food and Western boutique vendors; tickets cost $25 for adults, $15 for children aged 5 to 12 and are free for kids under 4.  The Tuscaloosa News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Alabama’s Tikkun Olam Makers won global awards for their low-cost assistive devices—such as the QuickClamp and a prosthetic leg cover—while competing against 470 teams from 33 campuses. The student team uses 3D printing and user feedback to quickly design solutions that help people live easier.  The University of Alabama
  • Tuscaloosa’s Central High School started a free summer bootcamp earlier this week to help nearly 40 students meet the state requirement to earn a College and Career Readiness Indicator — students study Microsoft Operation Specialist skills using lab simulations to prepare for upcoming tests and receive a certificate along with a $25 incentive.  WBRC

  • Tuscaloosa officials reviewed 30 properties — including the McAbee and Phelps Centers — as a plan to address a $15 million revenue loss from online sales tax issues and expensive retirement changes.
