CRIME NEWS

  • Former State Sen. Doug Ghee was indicted today—law enforcement has not yet released additional details on the charges.  WBRC
  • A domestic disturbance on Thursday afternoon in eastern Tuscaloosa County led deputies to respond to a reported pellet-pistol shooting in which a 34-year-old man allegedly shot his girlfriend, who sustained minor injuries (social media rumors had falsely claimed an active shooter) and he was arrested on charges of second-degree domestic violence.  Tuscaloosa Thread

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A University of Alabama professor said her fellowship program faced a budget cut threat if its curriculum was not changed to meet a state law banning DEI programs—she testified Wednesday in a federal lawsuit that a powerful legislator made the threat during a meeting at a UA game and that she has already adjusted her courses in response. The hearing will continue tomorrow with further testimony from students and university lawyers.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • To comply with the new FOCUS Act signed by Governor Kay Ivey, Tuscaloosa County School System will ban cell phones during school hours unless needed for classwork—students carrying phones at the wrong time will face discipline. The policy takes effect on August 7 and is designed to limit distractions while keeping emergency communication options open.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Transportation Security Administration said that starting May 7 travelers cannot use temporary paper driver's licenses for domestic flights and must show a Real ID-compliant license, passport, or other government-issued ID. Alabama residents are urged to get a STAR ID for $36.25 at any ALEA office which displays a gold star.  The Tuscaloosa News
