  • On Sunday, June 8 the Bloody Tuesday Organization will hold a commemorative program at the historic First African Baptist Church to honor Bloody Tuesday—when over 500 Black citizens were assaulted during civil rights protests in 1964. The event will start at 3 p.m. and feature a choir performance and speeches from Rev. David E. Gay, Jr., Dr. John Giggie and Rev.   • Baby Steps opened its new Tuscaloosa facility at UA to help student moms by offering housing and baby supplies — community leaders and UA officials attended the ribbon-cutting and said they will support expansion to more campuses.  Alabama Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State leaders including Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter and Senate Pro-Tempore Garlan Gudger met at a State of the State luncheon hosted by the West Alabama Chamber of Commerce to discuss newly passed laws such as a bill to protect law enforcement and the reorganization of the Birmingham Water Works Board. Ledbetter said the meeting was part of efforts to improve workforce participation in west Alabama as officials prepare for the 2026 election.  WBRC

  • Mosquito season is at its peak across Alabama with three reported cases of mosquito-borne illness including West Nile virus.
