  • Tuscaloosa’s One Place will host Fathers in the Park on Saturday, June 7 at Snow Hinton Park to offer games, food, and prizes for families, plus art by Jarvis Jackson as part of the CHAMPS initiative. The free event aims to strengthen bonds between dads and their children.  Tide 100.9
  • The Alabama State Conference of the NAACP will hold its 73rd annual convention in Tuscaloosa from Sept. 25–28 with about 200 activists expected to attend. Local leaders say the event will include workshops and motivational speakers to help shape community programs and push for civil rights.  The Crimson White
  • Jackie Wuska Wear, a Tuscaloosa County nonprofit leader who helps raise money for community groups, was named chair of the Alabama Association of Nonprofits board starting July 1 and will work with executive director Danielle Dunbar to support over 5,700 nonprofits + she also leads United Way of West Alabama to fund local agencies.  Tuscaloosa Thread

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alabama students were among over 2,900 National Merit Scholars chosen nationwide and will receive college-sponsored awards of $500 to $2,000 per year for up to four years—more scholars will be announced in July from over 15,000 finalists. Sponsor colleges selected students who plan to attend their institutions to recognize those with strong accomplishments, skills and potential for college success.  AL.com
  • Parents in Alabama can sign up for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program that mails free, high-quality books to children up to five regardless of income—this initiative has registered over 3 million children worldwide and gifted nearly 300 million books.  Tuscaloosa Thread
  • Local educators are partnering with Tuscaloosa City Schools to develop K-12 STEM programs for the new Saban Center—crews will break ground in July on the site across from the former Tuscaloosa News building and the center will open in 2027.  CBS 42

HEALTH NEWS

  • The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert on Organic Rancher ground beef sold at Whole Foods in 27 states — including Alabama — that tested positive for E. coli. The product, made on May 22nd and May 23rd with expiration dates on June 19th and June 20th, is no longer in stores and consumers are urged not to eat it.  The Tuscaloosa News
