  • Bishop Steven Raica announced that more than a dozen priest assignments will take effect on June 2, with additional roles on June 9 and July 1. Rev. Joshua Altonji from Scottsboro will serve as parochial administrator in Alexander City — other appointments include pastors in Tuscaloosa, Huntsville, and Decatur and retirements effective July 1.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eighth-graders at Northridge Middle School improved their PSAT scores by 70 points on average, beating the goal of a 60-point jump set by their incentive program. The improved scores earn over 30 teachers $500 each and 120 students a $50 gift card each — and the school will be honored as an A+ School of Excellence at an event in June.  Tuscaloosa Thread

  • The University of Alabama will offer new license plates featuring the classic Vault A logo starting June 1—current UA plate holders can renew at county offices on June 2. Last year, over 120,000 tags generated more than $5 million to support student scholarships.  Tuscaloosa Thread

  • Alabama baseball player Justin Lebron — who hit only one high school home run — now ties for fifth in the SEC with 18 homers, just four shy of the leader. His coach and former scout say his effort and weight gain show he could become an everyday major league shortstop.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • At SEC Spring Meetings, LSU coach Brian Kelly said coaches want to play Big Ten teams as part of a scheduling pact—while SEC commissioner Greg Sankey described three ways the talks could develop. Alabama football is ahead of the curve, having completed a home-and-home series with Wisconsin that included a 42-10 win and scheduling future non-conference games with Ohio State and Minnesota.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • On Thursday, Stillman College's athletic director Terrance Whittle was named the HBCU Athletic Conference AD of the Year after leading a season where the men’s and women’s basketball and softball teams won championships and five teams qualified for national competition — the college also hosted the conference basketball championships on campus.  Tide 100.9

  • Officials talked about a new playoff format that could have helped Alabama football in 2024 and may expand the field to 16 teams later — league commissioner Greg Sankey and SEC coaches mentioned ideas such as a five and 11 plan with automatic bids.
