COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Miss Iron City launched the Bread of Life initiative (a program to fight food insecurity) to support families (especially those facing hardship) in Tuscaloosa.  WBRC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Summer learning programs begin this week at Tuscaloosa City Schools, but a rejected property tax vote forced the district to cut free classes from 19 to 10 and enrollment from 3,000 to about 1,000—although some schools still offer free sessions for K-3 students through grants.  WBRC
  • Tuscaloosa City Schools announced changes to its summer learning program that will adjust schedules and class formats for students; the new plan will be shared soon+ aiming to help students remain engaged during the break. School officials expect that the adjustments will ease the transition back to regular classes in the fall.  WBRC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Creekwood Village, a HUD housing complex near Stillman College, is under Tuscaloosa Circuit Court receivership after residents complained about long-standing issues with rodent infestations and plumbing problems. The court-appointed firm plans to complete repairs within 30 days—Tuscaloosa City Council is working with the receivers to ensure safer living conditions.  CBS 42
  • Former Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill joined CBS 42 News on Wednesday, May 28 to say that Tommy Tuberville - the former Auburn head football coach - is the leading candidate for governor, while he noted that some have urged him to run for Tuberville's Senate seat and mentioned that Attorney General Steve Marshall is strong and Auburn men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl can raise campaign funds. This discussion comes ahead of the 2026 races for governor and Senate.  CBS 42
