COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Central Alabama will observe Memorial Day today with events at Alabama National Cemetery, Tuscaloosa Veterans Memorial Park, and Montevallo’s American Village. Events start as early as 9 a.m.—the cemetery holds its 17th annual ceremony and the park shifts indoors if rain occurs—and severe weather may affect some plans.  CBS 42
  • The YMCA summer food program held a food giveaway that filled pantries in Tuscaloosa ahead of summer, and organizers will offer more events if families need additional support—helping local residents prepare for the season.  WBRC
  • Today, officials in Tuscaloosa will dedicate a monument honoring fallen warriors to mark Memorial Day plus local leaders say the event will feature a moment of silence and brief remarks to remember those who served. This ceremony is set to offer a dignified tribute that builds community remembrance.  WBRC
  • A new memorial honoring veterans now stands at Oak Grove Memorial Park with 96 handcrafted wooden crosses for the deceased and 47 stars for active and retired service members, made by local resident Wayne Campbell and his wife. The dedication on Sunday had an Iwo Jima reenactment + Campbell plans to add ten more markers for Fourth of July and work toward a permanent memorial at the park.  ABC 33/40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Alabama Early College reduced tuition for high school students enrolling in its dual enrollment program to $33 per credit hour—a more than 90% reduction from the previous rate of $385. The program, which accepts students in grades 10—12 with a minimum 3.0 GPA, offers over 100 courses online in fall and spring while providing summer courses on campus.  The Crimson White
  • The Women and Gender Resource Center was renamed the Camellia Center on May 19 at University—its new name inspired by Alabama’s state flower to reflect a broader mission for the UA community. The center’s services remain the same—even as the University revised other diversity and inclusion programs following state law restrictions.  The Crimson White

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local meteorologists say that thunderstorms will hit later today with winds up to 60 mph and hail that can reach a quarter in size, while the tornado risk remains very low. The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded risk warnings in several counties—Tuscaloosa among them—with these conditions expected from 6 p.m. to midnight.  Tuscaloosa Thread
  • NOAA said the Atlantic hurricane season will start on June 1 with between 13 and 19 named storms—6 to 10 of which will become hurricanes and 3 to 5 will be major hurricanes. Other forecasters expect an active season so residents should update their hurricane plans.  The Tuscaloosa News
