  • On Memorial Day, U.S.S. Alabama Memorial Park will hold a commemoration marking 25 years since 9/11, featuring a flag lowering ceremony and an exhibit of ceramic red poppies (courtesy of local artist Julianne Hansen) near its giftshop next to U.S.S. Drum.  Alabama Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dream Big Charter School is launching a new athletic program next school year to include volleyball, girls basketball, flag football & cheer. Families must complete a Sports Interest Survey and a physical before summer tryouts.  Tuscaloosa Thread
  • Tuscaloosa youth ages 15 to 21 can apply for TES’s HOPE Initiative Summer Jobs Program, which runs from June 8 through July 31; applications close today at 5 p.m. Selected participants work 20 hours a week + earn $13.25 per hour.  Tuscaloosa Thread
  • Fork In The Road Foundation in West Alabama is accepting registrations for its Summer Camp 2026 program from May 26 through July 31. The camp for up to 65 kids offers hands-on STEM and robotics activities, field trips, meals (breakfast, lunch, and snacks), and transportation for families.  Tuscaloosa Thread

HEALTH NEWS

  • UAB orthopedic surgeon Dr. Amit Momaya warns locals to take simple water safety steps this Memorial Day weekend at lakes and pools after a rise in injuries from activities like tubing and water skiing. He advises people to seek medical help quickly if pain continues.  WBRC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alabama softball will open its Women’s College World Series run on Thursday, May 28 at 6 p.m. on ESPN2 + the Crimson Tide comes off a win over LSU and hopes to improve its 1-6 record against UCLA.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Alabama baseball has been named a national seed in the NCAA Tournament. Rankings will be revealed today during the selection show and the Crimson Tide will host regionals at Sewell-Thomas Stadium starting Friday, May 29.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Patrick Murphy praised the team for earning its Women’s College World Series berth, highlighting their strength ahead of the tournament. The 2026 Alabama softball squad is expected to compete well given his high compliments.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Alabama high school North + South All star softball teams were revealed after the championship in Oxford, with 18 seniors chosen. All star week will be held from July 20 to 24 in Montgomery, and the game is set for July 22 with first pitch at 4 p.m. Lagoon Park.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • The AHSAA Directors & Coaches Association announced the North and South high school All-Star baseball teams yesterday, each featuring 18 rising seniors; All-Star week is set for July 20-24 in Montgomery, with baseball opening Monday, July 20 at 4 p.m. at DABOS Park.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • High school all-star girls soccer teams were announced on May 24 by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association. The 25 rising seniors will compete in all-star week July 20–24 in Montgomery (the girls soccer game plays 5 p.m. July 22 at the YMCA Soccer Complex).  The Tuscaloosa News
