ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On May 17 (at about 11:20 p.m.), Michael E. Snipes, a 52-year-old Moundville man, was struck by an 18-year-old driver (in a 2004 Honda Civic) on Alabama 60 near the 4-mile marker about one mile south of Akron in Hale County and was pronounced dead at the scene while troopers investigate the incident.  The Tuscaloosa News

CRIME NEWS

  • Tuscaloosa Police charged a juvenile as an adult after a shooting near the intersection of 21st Street and Alston Avenue struck a female victim at about 1:30 a.m. on May 18 — she was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center for serious injuries and a recovered stolen firearm led to charges including Assault 1st Degree, Discharging into an Occupied Vehicle, and Certain Persons Prohibited from Possessing a Pistol.  ABC 33/40
  • A Tuscaloosa man, Hanston Alexander Clark—33 years old and known as Hank—was sentenced to 24 years in prison after his November 2024 conviction for a drug conspiracy involving meth and fentanyl that began with a June 2023 drug deal where he delivered drugs and firearms, as announced by U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escaloona.  ABC 33/40
  • Tuscaloosa police arrested a juvenile after a shooting left a woman seriously injured near the intersection of 21st Street + Alston Avenue on May 18 around 1:30 a.m., with officers recovering a stolen gun and charging the suspect with first-degree assault, discharging into an occupied vehicle, and other offenses.  WBRC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local education and workforce leaders launched the free 3by3 program to help new childcare providers get licensed and meet the needs of working parents in Tuscaloosa. Three program graduates now operate at-home daycare at capacity with a waiting list+ more participants are still completing the six-week course.  WBRC

  • Newly elected Tuscaloosa City Council and School Board members were sworn in on May 18th at Tuscaloosa River Market—marking the start of their terms—during a formal ceremony.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Tuscaloosa County PAR invites the public to a Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park on May 26th at 9:00 a.m.—the event will honor fallen military members with a color guard presentation, a pledge, the national anthem, a gun volley salute, Taps and remarks from retired military officials.  Tuscaloosa Thread
