  • Mountain High Outfitters is moving from the Shoppes at Legacy Park to a new 5,000 sqft store in Suite 310 at Midtown Village. The outdoor apparel retailer will host its Grand Opening on Saturday, June 6 (with limited-time discounts and a $500 gear giveaway).  Tuscaloosa Thread

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Alabama’s Carillonneur, Dr. Amir Zaheri, will perform a free Memorial Day concert with Denny Chimes on Sunday, May 24 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on The Quad — inviting families, students, alumni and community members to enjoy patriotic tunes and a moment of remembrance.  Tuscaloosa Thread

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brookwood High School presented 238 diplomas to its Class of 2026 during a graduation ceremony yesterday, where principal Sachiko Green and class president Corey Hatcher marked the milestone with heartfelt speeches.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • On May 13, a delegation from Ghana toured the Tuscaloosa Career and Technology Academy as part of a Sister Cities visit. Health sciences teacher Katelyn Taylor (who showcased an interactive table detailing human anatomy) led the group through the facility.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Sipsey Valley High held its graduation yesterday at Coleman Coliseum where 130 students walked in the processional and received diplomas along with awards (including Outstanding Attendance, Citizenship, and Kindness) as senior class president DeCarla Head delivered remarks.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • A national study found that Alabama students made significant progress in math and reading in 2025, thanks to state laws mandating phonics-based instruction and standardized testing (including the Numeracy Act). The state remains a bright spot amid a national trend of lower overall scores.  Alabama Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Thousands will march for voting rights Saturday in Montgomery after Supreme Court ruling cleared a map. The event starts with a 9 a.m. prayer in Selma — site of Bloody Sunday — and a 1 p.m. rally at the Capitol, with voting lunch and learn scheduled today in Birmingham.  WBRC

  • At the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago on Wednesday, May 13, Alabama basketball player Amari Allen said he would return if he does not receive a first-round draft promise & expects a bigger role as point guard & playmaker; his decision is due by the draft deadline on May 27.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Shelton State baseball players joined the Steve (and DC) Morning Show on 953 The Bear this morning, where they shared details about their fourth division title and personal stories. The players are now in Louisiana to continue their winning ways.  Tuscaloosa Thread
