EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At a signing ceremony on Thursday, 13 Tuscaloosa City Schools graduates promised to major in education and return to teach as part of the Grow Your Home Teacher program, which aims to ease the teacher shortage + support local learning. WBRC
- ➤ Tuscaloosa Academy held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday morning for its $7M Mayers Athletic Center (named after local philanthropists Ric and Chloe Mayers), which will include a fieldhouse, gym, and concession stands. Construction is expected to last 12 months, with the new facility planned for the next academic year. Tide 100.9
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Tuscaloosa’s Environmental Services Department and Nucor Steel will host a free drop-off event for residents to safely dispose of household hazardous waste on Saturday, June 6 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Public Safety Logistics building (3311 Reese Phifer Avenue) for Tuscaloosa County residents only. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Alabama basketball will travel to Las Vegas during the week of Thanksgiving to compete in the growing Players Era Festival, where 16 teams will face off as ESPN broadcasts the tournament. The Tuscaloosa News
- ➤ Alabama softball will face Florida today at 4 p.m. CT in the SEC Tournament semifinals at John Cropp Stadium in Lexington (Ky), with ESPN broadcasting the game and Fubo offering a free trial for streaming. The Tuscaloosa News
- ➤ Alabama Athletics announced it canceled the home – and – home series with Oklahoma State so the game scheduled in Oklahoma State in 2028 and in Tuscaloosa in 2029 will not take place; officials said the change came as a mutual agreement between the two schools. WBRC
