- ➤ The City of Tuscaloosa broke ground at Bowers Park to replace an old tennis court with 19 new pickleball courts that will raise the total to 27 public courts. The county parks authority will manage the complex that is set to begin work in August and open next December — plans that aim to host tournaments and draw visitors. WBRC
- ➤ The Alabama State Conference of the NAACP announced it will bring 150 to 200 members to Tuscaloosa in September for a conference at the Hotel Capstone to train on civic engagement and honor a local mining tragedy. Leaders noted the historic event—where three Black miners died in 1901 during a flood at Manderson Landing—and said the group will commission a marker at the site. WBRC

- ➤ Governor Kay Ivey signed Senate Bill 119 into law to reduce inner‐city gun violence by imposing stricter penalties on firearm possession for those with recent or repeated felony convictions—shooting into an occupied dwelling now carries a harsher classification, and most changes will take effect on October 1.
