BUSINESS NEWS

  • McDonald’s is phasing out its self-serve soda fountains at many Alabama locations. The chain began updating remodels and will continue the change gradually until 2032 (with faster updates in larger metro areas) to streamline operations and improve service.  The Tuscaloosa News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Alabama awarded over 7,000 degrees at Coleman Coliseum starting Friday and continues with ceremonies for various colleges (one session began this morning) that will conclude Sunday, with summer graduation set for Aug. 1.  Tuscaloosa Thread
  • Shelton State Community College celebrated 40 nursing graduates and two inaugural medical lab technology graduates in a pinning and candle lighting ceremony that honored Florence Nightingale. The college said it will soon open a new skills lab to enlarge class sizes and help ease the local nursing shortage.  WBRC
  • Local nursing schools will honor nursing graduates in graduation ceremonies later this week. The events will be held at school campuses (exact details to be announced) as a celebration of students' hard work.  WBRC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Eight-year-old Savana Bennington has nearly finished two months of treatment at Children's Hospital for POLG mitochondrial disease after a stroke weakened her abilities. She is expected to return home soon as her family adjusts their mobile home + readies ongoing care while sharing awareness about this rare illness.  ABC 33/40

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said the team finished spring practice well + is now focusing on recruiting high school talent and key transfers to boost its defense for the 2026 season in Tuscaloosa.  Tide 100.9
  • Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer expects star receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams to lead a resurgence this fall — his healthy offseason and focused work ethic position him as a key leader for the Crimson Tide.   • Mary G. Montgomery head football coach Zach Golson was placed on administrative leave Monday after concerns emerged over a signing ceremony involving eighth graders whose zoning was under review. Golson, who improved the team's record to 37 to 10 over four seasons, declined to comment.  AL.com
  • College softball rankings released for Week 13 show Oklahoma as the top-ranked team heading into the SEC Softball Tournament. The rankings (updated through May 2 games) include Alabama and other teams preparing for their conference tournaments.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Former Alabama linebacker Deontae Lawson signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent and will try to earn a roster spot at training camp, his former coach Kane Wommack said on Monday (praising Lawson's leadership at Lakewood Golf Club in Point Clear).  AL.com
