CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Sumter County family filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of retired trooper Daryl Brown, who was killed on August 8, 2024 on I-59 north when a speeding, drunk driver—Daaron Crooks—changed lanes and hit his car, pushing it into a guardrail before an 18-wheeler driven by Luis Garcia struck him; Crooks faces indictment for manslaughter and assault while the suit also names Garcia and Bravo Express. - ➤ Tuscaloosa police say a 45-year-old man was shot and killed at the Links Apartments on April 27 around 12:30 a.m. during a domestic dispute and evidence suggests his actions may have been self-defense—no arrests have been made. The Tuscaloosa News

- ➤ The University of Alabama will award over 6,600 degrees at Coleman Coliseum from May 2 through May 4 as part of its spring commencement while more than 1,500 supporters contributed to the Bama Blitz for the Rising Tide 2.0 Capital Campaign. UA is also launching summer camps and hosting the RISE Center CHIP in for RISE fundraiser today at the University Club in Tuscaloosa — events that support education and early intervention services. - ➤ Alabama residents who receive Social Security benefits will see SSI checks on May 1 (covering May's payment) and May 30 (an advance for June) while retirement benefits are set for May 14, May 21, and May 28 depending on birth dates; the Social Security Administration issued the schedule so residents know when to expect funds. - ➤ Stillman College won the HBCUAC Softball Championship with a 10 to 3 victory over Dillard University—its first tournament title as the Tigers outscored opponents 29 to 10 in three games and earned a berth in the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round.
