CRIME NEWS

  • Tuscaloosa authorities have arrested Kendarius Lewis, 22, on charges of alleged sexual offenses — three counts of first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sodomy and two counts of first-degree sexual abuse that occurred in Cottondale and Northport between 2020 and 2025.  ABC 33/40
  • A teenager, the girlfriend’s son, was charged with capital murder after fatally shooting Cornelius Darnell Witherspoon inside his vehicle in the Cottondale community early Friday morning— investigators said an argument triggered the shooting.  ABC 33/40
  • A 22-year-old man was charged with seven sex crimes including rape, sodomy, and sexual abuse for allegedly abusing multiple victims in Northport and Cottondale between 2020 and today—police said no more details will be released to protect victims' privacy.  Tuscaloosa Thread

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tuscaloosa City Schools launched the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System (SS-ARS) to let students, staff, and community members safely report concerns via a phone hotline, website, or mobile app. The free platform, provided by Sandy Hook Promise, went live in mid-March and sends credible tips to a National Crisis Center for review and action if needed.  Tuscaloosa Thread

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alabama lawmakers passed bills that would, if signed, require public schools to display the Ten Commandments and remove references to drag shows and pride flags—while another measure would require state and local agencies to use Gulf of America on maps and textbooks. The bills cleared the House and now move to the Senate for further review.  Alabama Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, the Alabama Department of Public Health released the WICShopper app to help WIC participants track eligibility and monthly food packages—allowing them to find nearby WIC clinics and authorized grocery stores, and replacing the old WIC app.  WBRC
