- ➤ Dr. Dan Bachrach from Culverhouse College of Business is set to receive the 2024 Burnum Distinguished Faculty Award at a ceremony on April 23 at 4 p.m. in Deshe Parlor—he will deliver a special lecture titled "Leadership and Scholarship at the Culverhouse College of Business." - ➤ A senior from Paul W Bryant High School became the first in Tuscaloosa City Schools to earn the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship when he received a $40,000 scholarship & engineering internship on April 12; he is set to graduate next month with a 4.3 GPA and will choose between The University of Alabama and the University of Michigan for his engineering studies. - ➤ Mayor Walt Maddox, Councilman Cassius Lanier and most city council members cut the ribbon at Springbrook Park Tuesday morning—almost $2 million was used for a new fifth-mile walking track, improved lighting and security cameras, two playgrounds and covered seating areas. The park at 500 30th Street East opened to the public with funds from the Elevate Tuscaloosa sales tax plan—offering new recreation and safety for the community. Tuscaloosa Thread
- ➤ Alabama residents aged 18 and over must have a STAR ID if they plan to fly or enter secure federal sites because starting May 7 a license or ID card that meets Real ID standards is required. Residents can obtain their STAR ID at any Alabama Law Enforcement Agency driver's license office by showing four documents to prove their identity. The Tuscaloosa News
- ➤ Tuscaloosa mayor Walt Maddox said the city's budget is tight after the property tax increase failed and the internet sales tax cost $15 million—school district leaders will cut 24 jobs next school year to balance the budget. WBRC
- ➤ Mayor Maddox said tariffs on exported goods could hurt Tuscaloosa in the long run while changes to A-Day at UA have led to fewer fans at practices but other school events are making up for it. He noted that the McWright’s-Ferry road project will finish this fall and bids for the new Saban Center will come in on May 15th (with construction expected to start in August). WBRC
