EDUCATION NEWS

  • Linda McMahon, the new Secretary of Education, plans to reduce the department and shift Title IX enforcement to the Department of Justice — a change experts and Alabama women's sports fans say could weaken protections for female students and athletes — as colleges begin adjusting policies.  Alabama Public Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service said a few strong to severe storms developed Thursday evening into early Friday morning, bringing wind gusts up to 60 mph and large hail up to a quarter in size. Tuscaloosa was under a slight risk period from Thursday 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.—activity weakened over South Alabama after midnight.  Tuscaloosa Thread

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lulu Gribbon, 16, lost her hand and part of her leg in a shark attack on June 7th — she urged lawmakers to pass a bill for a shark alert system that warns the public of unprovoked attacks off the coast. The committee advanced the bill on Wednesday and it now moves to the full House with support from state leaders.  ABC 33/40
  • Gov. Ivey praised the Senate for unanimously passing a bill that bans cell phones on public school properties and requires a social media safety course before the eighth grade; the companion bill passed in the House last week and the two bills will soon swap chambers before one is sent to his desk.  CBS 42

  • Jake Hildebrand—a five-star offensive tackle prospect in the class of 2027 from Arizona—will visit Tuscaloosa tomorrow for Tide’s A-Day final spring scrimmage, marking his first visit to the campus.  Tide 100.9
  • The Crimson Tide wide receiver room is expected to be one of the best in the country as returning stars Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard join key additions like Isaiah Horton and rising talent Lotzier Brooks — providing Alabama a deep pool of skills for fall football.
