ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A year ago, a gas explosion leveled a home in Oak Grove and killed an elderly man, and residents remain fearful as the cause—linked to an uncapped abandoned well and methane gas leaks—is still under study even as experts warn that up to 100 homes remain at risk.  ABC 33/40
  • University of Alabama senior Malachi Crain died on April 5 in a camping accident — a prayer service for his family will be held Thursday after the 12:30 p.m. Mass at St. Francis University Parish in Tuscaloosa.  The Tuscaloosa News

  • Sports Illustrated will present revised plans for a Tuscaloosa resort in the next 90 days as the city invests nearly $1.4 million to add eight new pickleball courts at Buddy Powell Pavilion. District 3 Councilman Norman Crow said the McWrights Ferry Road extension, connecting Rice Mine Road to New Watermelon Road, is on track to finish late September — a move expected to ease traffic flow.  ABC 33/40

  • Today, the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama announced a new partnership between the Tuscaloosa County Chapter of SCLC and Englewood Elementary School to provide student awards, teacher incentives and volunteer mentoring. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The fiancé of Alireza Doroudi said that the past few days have been very hard after he was arrested by ICE on March 25 near his apartment by the University of Alabama, where he was studying and had his visa revoked. Doroudi is held at the Central Louisiana ICE Processing Center in Jena while he waits for a court hearing.  CBS 42
  • Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox hosted over 50 Alabama mayors at the River Market on Monday morning to review data showing that the city lost millions in online sales tax revenue due to the current split in tax collection — he said these losses have forced Tuscaloosa to pause some future city projects.  Tuscaloosa Thread
  • Alabama lawmakers are working on a bill to extend tax credits for doctors who work in rural areas by removing rules that blocked doctors living outside the community from qualifying. Lawmakers will debate the proposal until mid May—after concerns raised by doctors and patients who face long drives for care.  Alabama Public Radio
