CULTURE NEWS

  • MJ Live performs today at 7:30 p.m. at Historic Bama Theatre, featuring a Michael Jackson tribute by Danny Dash Andrews with live music and lighting.   • Tuscaloosa high schools will hold graduation ceremonies for the class of 2026 with public schools hosting May 11 events at Coleman Coliseum while county schools schedule ceremonies May 12–14 and private schools hold theirs from May 14 to May 22 (details vary by school).  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Tuscaloosa City Schools introduced the Premier Initiative to support special education teachers with a $5,000 supplement, extra planning days, and structured mentorship (to boost retention) with a Board vote on April 7; if approved, planning begins this spring and the program rolls out in the 2026 to 2027 school year.  ABC 33/40

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Alabama Forestry Commission issued a Fire Danger Advisory today due to falling humidity and rising winds that increase wildfire risk. Outdoor burning is restricted with permits available only to certified managers tomorrow - unauthorized burns may lead to misdemeanor charges.  The Tuscaloosa News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alabama is considering cutting tax breaks for data centers as lawmakers review economic incentives for tech growth. The proposal may affect companies in Tuscaloosa if enacted soon.  WBRC
  • Work on Greensboro Avenue in downtown is set to begin in May to remove a traffic lane and widen sidewalks. The city will award a $3.8 million contract to local contractor GFC Construction (lowest responsible bidder), with improvements expected to complete by September.  Tuscaloosa Thread
