  • Celebrated restaurateur Charles Morgan and partners Miller Mobley and Cris Eddings will open a larger New York-style Slim’s Pizzeria at the renovated corner of Greensboro Avenue and 6th Street later this year. CULTURE NEWS

  • Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s Eta Xi Omega Chapter will host a free family event on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tuscaloosa Public Library (Weaver Bolden Branch) to celebrate Black Children’s Book Week with authors, bookmark decorating, face painting, and a coloring station.  Tuscaloosa Thread

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Over 100 Tuscaloosa City teachers took part in an 8-hour training provided by the Tuscaloosa Police (helping them spot mental health struggles and learn calming techniques) so they can quickly connect students to counselors and social workers, with University Place Elementary teachers leading this effort after a day off school.  WBRC
  • Dr. Lucretia Prince, local educator and I Dream Big Charter School co-founder, is honored as a Black History Maker of Alabama at the Townsend Nissan event at 2620 Skyland E Blvd in Tuscaloosa; she inspires students to dream big and build legacy (a tribute to her lifelong commitment to education).  Tuscaloosa Thread
  • Boaters across Alabama can attend safety courses before Memorial Day weekend. In Tuscaloosa, sessions run on March 14 at the ALEA Tuscaloosa Trooper Post (8 AM - 4 PM) and on April 11 at the same location, where proper licensing, life jacket use, and safe navigation practices will be taught.  Tuscaloosa Thread
  • Four Tuscaloosa City Schools earned 2025 Schools of Distinction from the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (Skyland Elementary, STARS Academy, Tuscaloosa Magnet, Westlawn Middle) as District 4 winners.   • Dr. Stephanie Mitchell, the first Black Certified Professional Midwife licensed in Alabama, is celebrated as a 2026 Black History Maker and is pioneering a freestanding birthing center under development in Sumter County to expand safe and equitable maternal care.   • Mel Kiper’s pre-NFL combine mock draft highlights Alabama’s Ty Simpson and Kadyn Proctor as likely first-round picks ahead of 319 draftees meeting in Indianapolis this week. The NFL draft will be held April 23–25 as teams prepare for future seasons.  Tide 100.9
  • Alabama coach Nate Oats said select bench players — including transfers and a freshman guard — are staying after practice to boost their minutes on the court. He expects their extra work to help in today's 8 p.m. game vs. Mississippi State on ESPNU.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Tuscaloosa County boys basketball clinched its first AHSAA Final Four berth with a 54-47 win over Thompson on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at the Northwest Regional championship; the Wildcats will face the Class 7A Central Regional Champion at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Legacy Arena.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork said he expects the home-and-home series with Alabama to be played as scheduled, with Alabama set to visit Columbus on Sept. 18, 2027 and the return game held next season in Tuscaloosa (the games bring a significant revenue boost).  Tide 100.9
