EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Alabama broke ground on a new ROTC Facility and Student Veterans Center Friday with President Peter Mohler, Brig. Gen. Maurice Barnett, and Col. Eugene Moore III shoveling dirt; construction will finish in March with funding from the Education Trust Fund Supplemental Appropriations Act and institutional reserves.  The Crimson White
  • Harlie Hicks, a sophomore in sport management, is running for SGA vice president academic affairs to boost support for first-generation students — including plans for workshops and clearer academic guidance — and promote mental health awareness. Her campaign will launch mentorship programs within the first month if elected.  The Crimson White
  • Senior Kyle Porter, a public health student, is running for SGA president to bring a fresh-faced approach to campus leadership. He will form Student Executive Councils and host forums to ensure student voices are heard and included in the SGA’s decisions.  The Crimson White
  • Anna Beth Frazier, a sophomore and Barefield College Senator who leads the student affairs committee, is running uncontested for SGA vice president; she plans to launch volunteer hours (and campus collaboration days) to boost student engagement as voters support her on Feb. 24 on MyBama.  The Crimson White
  • Candidates for the 115th SGA presidency, including Kyle Porter, Aaron Rak and Samantha Simmons, debated at the Student Center Theatre on Sunday, Feb. 22 (ahead of Tuesday's myBama election from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.). Moderated by Jackson Harris, they outlined plans to improve student services and cut fees.  The Crimson White
  • Madelyn Herwig, a business and English sophomore, is running for SGA vice president of academic affairs today. She plans to bridge gaps between students and UA administrators by supporting off-campus placements and hosting a President’s list reception next Tuesday (campaign focus).  The Crimson White

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In January, Tuscaloosa County homes were listed at a median price of $328,900—a slight drop from December but 4.9% higher than last January. The market also saw 308 new listings—a 19.4% increase from January 2025.  The Tuscaloosa News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The AHSAA Elite Eight high school basketball playoffs kick off today and run through Feb. 25 at four regional sites (Wallace State, Alabama State, Jacksonville State and Garrett Coliseum), with winning teams advancing to the Final Four at Legacy Arena.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • At Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, LSU’s Pistol Pete Maravich scored a record 69 points in 1970 in a game Alabama won 106-104; a postgame altercation followed when a photographer taunted him. Local fans still recall the historic display as a highlight of that packed night.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • On Saturday, Alabama beat LSU 90 to 83 for its sixth straight win. Key players Holloway + Allen led the Tide, and the team will host Mississippi State Wednesday as LSU visits Mississippi.  WBRC
