CULTURE NEWS

  • Alabama Shakes will perform at Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater in Tuscaloosa on Friday, June 12 with support from The Secret Sisters. Tickets will go on sale Friday, Feb. 20 at 10:00 a.m. CST after a pre-sale Thursday, Feb. 19 at 10:00 a.m. CST.  ABC 33/40

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The state will hold its annual severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday from Friday, Feb. 20 through Sunday, Feb. 22, offering buyers savings on items such as flashlights & portable generators; check with local retailers for specific discount rates.  WBRC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Alabama is expanding its nursing program by adding new courses and boosting capacity, details announced today at the Tuscaloosa campus. The effort will help meet growing healthcare needs for local students and providers.  WBRC

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Data from Zumper shows Tuscaloosa apartment rents increased 4% from last year's $1,325 median to $1,375 in January (one-bedroom rents rose 7% while two-bedroom listings slightly dropped), keeping local rates 26% below national medians.  The Tuscaloosa News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Washington State beat Alabama 8-4 in the season opener as the Cougars built an early lead and stayed ahead. Alabama will face Washington State again tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Sewell Thomas Stadium (game two of the three-game series).  Tide 100.9
  • Alabama basketball forward Taylor Bol Bowen is out for today's home game against South Carolina as he recovers from leg and hand injuries (coach Nate Oats said he is not yet at 100%).  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Charles Bediako remains a student-athlete at Alabama despite being ineligible to play; coach Nate Oats said he practiced on Feb. 13 and attends classes and scout team sessions while working on his degree and fitness.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • After a record-setting weekend in Atlanta, No. 13 Alabama softball returned home for the Easton Bama Bash at Rhoads Stadium. The team played on Friday and will host two games today against Liberty and Purdue before concluding on Sunday against Georgia Southern on SEC Network+ and ESPN+.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • After Tuscaloosa Circuit Court denied an injunction for Charles Bediako, head coach Nate Oats defended playing the forward in five games—citing his Bible reading for guidance—during a Friday press conference. Opposing coaches questioned fairness as teams faced a shortened roster.  Tide 100.9
