ECONOMY NEWS

  • Crews are converting the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama's 5700 foot atrium into a 150 seat workforce training center in downtown to support automotive and community training; renovations including meeting space, a catering facility, and a video screen will finish in May.  WBRC
  • Tuscaloosa and four West Alabama counties will share $12.7 million in state industrial development grants from the SEEDS program – part of a $15.7 million allocation among 21 counties – to prepare sites for new industry.  Tuscaloosa Thread

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Alabama suspended Delta Sigma Phi and placed Theta Chi, Sigma Tau Gamma, Sigma Phi, and Delta Kappa Epsilon on probation after the 2025 Hazing Transparency Report revealed repeated hazing violations.   • A fire caused extensive damage to the home dugout at Tuscaloosa City Schools' baseball field late Monday night — officials reported no injuries and said they will assess repair options before the season opener.  ABC 33/40
  • Eastwood Middle School has cut chronic absenteeism by nearly 50 percent using a monthly house system that rewards attendance, academics and participation. School officials in Tuscaloosa say the program has boosted class engagement and school spirit among 627 students.  WBRC

  • Congresswoman Terri Sewell announced that $9.5 million in federal funds will support five West Alabama projects — including upgrades to Tuscaloosa Public Library, a community center transformation in Marion, health center improvements in Uniontown, a joint police and fire station in Aliceville, and a new center in Sumter County.  Tuscaloosa Thread

  • Tuscaloosa judge Daniel Pruet ruled against Charles Bediako's request for an injunction on Friday, Feb. 6, making him ineligible to play for Alabama this season after five games played under a temporary restraining order that expired today.
