  • Alabama’s first-time jobless claims dropped to 1,866 (down from 2,377) last week, and overall claims fell to 209,000 (from 210,000) as reported by the Labor Department.  The Tuscaloosa News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mindy Walker, a Tuscaloosa County teacher, was chosen to join a national seminar on Holocaust education. The two-day program will run over the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday (focusing on new ways to use AI in teaching) to help students learn history.  WBRC
  • UA student Hector Gutierrez mistakenly sent a recommendation letter via a campus listserv on Wednesday evening, reaching over 24,000 students and exposing personal details—prompting the Office of Information Technology and the Office of Student Involvement to review email practices.  The Crimson White
  • Central High School's band is planning an April 9–12 tour to Dallas to raise $50,000 for cultural and educational activities, including tours of AT&T Stadium, the Dallas Museum of Art, and Six Flags Over Texas.   • The SGA Senate approved changes to the Judicial Board and revised block seating rules on Thursday, passing several student-focused measures including a Career Center tabling event and a survey promotion tied to an upcoming Share the Love event.
