EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Stillman College hosted its Spring Convocation yesterday as part of its sesquicentennial celebrations in Tuscaloosa. Jamal Watson (author and journalist) delivered the keynote address while the college choir, led by Willie Williams, performed during the ceremony. The Tuscaloosa News
- ➤ The Alabama House passed House Bill 152 to remove the mandate that requires UA to run a School of Social Work (serving 600 students) and allow more academic freedom. The bill now moves to the senate and could take effect Oct. 1 if signed by Governor Ivey. Tuscaloosa Thread
- ➤ Governor Ivey met with Miss Terry and Nick Saban at the statehouse to support the Saban Center STEM initiative, which received $25 million for teacher training. The center broke ground last year (expected to open in 2027) and will offer hands-on STEM and arts learning for students and educators. Tuscaloosa Thread

- ➤ Starting Feb. 1, travelers in Alabama who lack a compliant STAR ID or other approved ID will pay a $45 TSA fee to use the optional ConfirmID process, which adds extra screening and could delay flights. Passengers are urged to verify their ID before heading to the airport (ConfirmID is not a replacement for REAL ID). The Tuscaloosa News
- ➤ If federal lawmakers do not pass a spending bill by today, IRS operations will slow down starting Saturday, Jan. 31+ delaying tax refunds for Alabama taxpayers+ while the April 15 filing deadline stays unchanged. The Tuscaloosa News

- ➤ Alabama has named former Auburn offensive coordinator Derrick Nix as its new wide receiver coach — replacing JaMarcus Shephard. Coach Kalen DeBoer said Nix will work closely with veteran receiver Ryan Williams to help him lead the squad into 2026. Tide 100.9
- ➤ Alabama football defensive tackle Jeremiah Beaman is now a full participant in offseason workouts after rehabbing a season-ending knee injury + defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said he is expected to join limited spring practice and be ready for fall camp. The Tuscaloosa News
- ➤ Alabama basketball center Charles Bediako will play in at least two more games as his injunction hearing is rescheduled to Feb. 6 at 9:30 a.m. (his participation for the Auburn game on Feb. 7 depends on the verdict). The Tuscaloosa News
- ➤ Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer and defensive coordinator Kane Wommack are excited about the 2026 pass rush as new recruits and returning players bring size + athleticism. - ➤ Alabama basketball used 12 starting lineups this season — the most under coach Nate Oats — as injuries prevented a consistent starting five. The Crimson Tide will play Florida on Sunday, Feb. 1 as the team continues to adjust its lineup. The Tuscaloosa News
- ➤ Charles Bediako's eligibility hearing against the NCAA is set for Friday, Feb. 6 — after Judge Roberts' recusal, new Judge Daniel Pruet will preside — and under a restraining order he stays eligible for upcoming games against Florida and Texas A&M, but his future participation is not guaranteed. - ➤ Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer explained on Wednesday at Senior Bowl practice that the Tide let go of offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic to bring a fresh approach.
