  • Volunteers from the University of Alabama Center for Service and Leadership picked up 327 lbs of trash on Monday along Martin Luther King Boulevard to honor MLK's legacy. Tuscaloosa County Public Works supported the effort + helped promote cleaner streets in our community.  Tuscaloosa Thread

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Kay Ivey announced a $3.8M federal Preschool Development Grant for the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education on Wednesday to boost early care and learning for children from birth through age five. The grant will help increase educator training, program consistency, and family engagement.  WBRC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forecast models show the storm track has shifted north so the Winter Storm Watch now covers northern Alabama while the I-20 corridor remains unaffected; residents in the north will face a cold snap with temperatures dropping into the teens starting Sunday night.  Tuscaloosa Thread

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colder mornings have some residents warming up their cars but state law requires drivers to stay by their vehicles + lock them to avoid citations; local police have already enforced this rule to help prevent theft and accidents.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue received a $241,810 federal grant to fund training programs for various emergency roles, including task force leaders and technical search specialists. Chief Mark Delk said the funding will boost department capabilities and community resilience.  The Crimson White

HEALTH NEWS

  • LifeSouth is asking for blood donations in Tuscaloosa as a winter storm set for Friday, Jan. 23 to Sunday, Jan. 25 may force center closures and cancel drives—putting patients at risk of a low supply. Donors receive a sweatshirt, $40 e-gift card for certain donations, and free A1c testing.  WBRC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alabama football moved its 2026 South Florida game to Sept. 11, 2032 and added a Nov. 21 home game against Chattanooga — with contract payments of $300,000 and $700,000 to South Florida and $500,000 to Chattanooga. The schedule also adds a 2027 home game against Marshall on Sept. 4.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • The University of Alabama supports former Crimson Tide center Charles Bediako after he received a 10-day restraining order allowing him to play. He could return on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. CT when Alabama hosts Tennessee while a court hearing is set for Jan. 27.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • A poll of local readers shows more than 82% support separating public and private high school sports, with 44% backing a full split, and the AHSAA will announce fall reclassification on Friday, Jan. 23. Private schools have raised concerns about competitive balance & lawmakers have proposed limits on the association’s authority.  The Tuscaloosa News
