  • Today, Phoenix House received a $50,000 donation from the Tuscaloosa Rotary Club Memorial Foundation to upgrade plumbing for its women’s bathroom and shower — making the facilities more accessible for clients seeking to rebuild their lives.  WBRC
  • On Jan. 19, several hundred people marched to honor Martin Luther King Jr. during the Unity Day March, walking from Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary + City Hall along Stillman Blvd to celebrate his legacy.  The Tuscaloosa News
  • Residents participated in the 6th annual MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 19 by volunteering at local service sites to honor Dr. King's legacy. The event brought neighbors together to improve community spaces and foster unity.  WBRC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two nursing students from Shelton State Community College have joined an apprenticeship program at Bibb Medical Center (Centreville) that offers on-the-job training along with classroom lessons and labs. They will begin the program soon as part of a partnership started in 2022 to prepare future licensed nurses.  WBRC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forecasters track a potential winter storm that may bring freezing rain and ice storm conditions to northern Alabama Saturday. Residents are advised to follow updated forecasts as details will become clearer later this week.  Tuscaloosa Thread

  • DCH Regional Medical Center reported that flu cases peaked at 333 just before Christmas and dropped to 65 by Jan. 5 — Emergency Room Medical Director Dr. Elwin Crawford advises residents to get a flu shot and practice good hygiene during peak flu season.  WBRC

  • Rental listings in Tuscaloosa remained steady with most apartments at $1,350, though two-bedroom units dropped 8% from November to $1,100 and one-bedrooms held at $950 — statewide rates average $1,400 and national rents are 28% higher.  The Tuscaloosa News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alabama’s cheer team claimed its eighth national title after scoring 93.5 (beating South Florida’s 89.6) in Orlando this past weekend. Coach Jennifer Thrasher praised the seniors for their performance in the All-Girl National Championship.  Tide 100.9
  • Crimson Tide coach Nate Oats said redshirts might be needed for freshmen guard Davion Hannah and center Collins Onyejiaka after medical setbacks.   • Two proposed bills in the Alabama Senate could reshape high school sports broadcasting—Senate Bill 76 would extend schools' control to postseason games while Senate Bill 73 would revise athletic association oversight by mandating political board appointments.
